Its 1961, the day my mother was having contractions, the day I was going to be born. It was cold and raining, it was Oct day, when the leaves were turning to dark red to orange to mildewing.
My mother had contractions, there was no one to drive her to the hospital. We lived in Manhattan I can not recall where. My mother who was five foot tall, a Sicilian who did not speak english, and weighed no more than 100lbs, drove her car towards Brooklyn to our hospital Long Island College. Her water broke, Oh fonguel and other kind words, she said (She told me)
She got out of the car as she was in the right lane of the bridge in the middle section of the Brooklyn Bridge she gave birth to me in the backseat. Out popped me!
A woman found us both drove us across to the hospital there you can see me with a full head of dark hair, my skin was pink. I felt like the michelin man with fat cheeks, small rounded head and fat legs and arms. They asked my mother what she wanted to name me, she just pointed. The picture of the bridge that saved her.

Hi
I have just found a newspaper cutting regarding my Gt Grandfather, Phillip Spencer. He was a sailor and describes a visit to New York where his ship helped put out a fire in a Paraffin Factory in the Harbour, the day before the opening of Brooklyn Bridge. The water pumped from the ships returned to the Harbour boiling

Running of the Brooklyn Bridge many times in the early morning. Whether it was through hues of golden orange and red as the sun rose to bring the day or through rain that began to slant with the wind once you hit the open air of the Bridge. The sturdy wood under your feet, the anonymous friends running past joining you in the daily ritual, the Statute of Liberty standing steadfastly proud by your side.

I have many memories of the Brooklyn Bridge, from getting married at the River Café with the back-drop of the most beautiful landmark to driving to Wall Street everyday. There was one day, held very dear heart as I made my drive on 9/11 @ 7:00 am. It was a most tranquil and serene day; and the bridge was tranquil too. The sun rays shined upon and illuminated the cables and towers as I’ve never seen before. For some reason, on this day, the bridge exuded such peacefulness, and I remember being very touched by the beauty of the bridge. Traffic was non-existent. Later that morning, as I walked quickly over the bridge with my eyes closed and hands clutched not knowing if the bridge was next, I remember my Dad standing at the foot of the bridge waiting for me. When I arrived in Red Hook, for weeks I sat on the pier looking sadly upon our losses; and reflecting on the Brooklyn Bridge and how it got so many of us home safe on this day.

I remember riding my tricycle over the Brooklyn Bridge when I was 4 or 5.

One of the greatest walks I have ever had over the Brooklyn Bridge (and I have done it 100's of times!) was in the mid 90's. I left Manhattan late and walked the bridge home. As I was crossing, a fireworks show started at South Street Seaport. The fireworks were bursting at nearly the same height as the walkway. The flashes of color illuminated the bridge towers and reflected off the glass office buildings in lower Manhattan. It was a magical moment that I will never forget.
